What is Dry Skin?
Dry skin is characterized by a lack of the appropriate amount of water in the most superficial layer of the skin, the epidermis. The epidermis is normally composed of fat and protein which help prevent skin dehydration. When there’s a deficiency in proteins and/or fat the skin moisture evaporates more easily. As one ages the amounts of natural skin oils and lubricants diminishes, causing dryness in areas such as the face, arms, hands, and particularly lower legs.
Symptoms and Causes of Dry Skin
Dry skin is usually a temporary condition that is related to age, health, and environmental factors. It is characterized by a feeling of tightness, especially after spending time soaked in water, like after bathing or swimming. When the skin is dry it often looks and feels a bit rough, with fine lines or cracks, as well as some form of flaking, peeling or scaling. Some people with dry skin may also experience itching and change in skin coloration such as redness or grayness.
The main causes of dry skin are environmental, such as weather. The skin tends to be the driest when there is low humidity and low temperatures, so it is especially common during winter, when it’s cold and heaters and fireplaces are used, causing reduced humidity. Another common cause of dry skin is the use of harsh soaps and detergents, which are formulated to remove oil, and subsequently strip moisture from the skin.
Although dry skin is usually harmless, if it is not cared for, it may lead to Atopic dermatitis (eczema) and infections in persons over the age of 40. Similarly, as skin becomes dry, it also may become more sensitive and prone to rashes and skin breakdown.
Dry skin is unpleasant and is relatively easy to prevent by using moisturizers, wearing rubber gloves when using harsh cleansers, and covering as much skin as possible in windy or cold weather. It is said that oxygen facials are especially suitable for the treatment of dry, sensitive and mature skin.
Oxygen Facials
An oxygen facial is a non-medical procedure that is gentle and painless and requires no harsh chemical peels. The treatment begins with skin cleansing, exfoliation, and a mild facial steam, before a machine is used to introduce oxygen directly into the skin’s pores. Typically the oxygen is treated with a number of supplements, such as vitamins, that nourish the skin. This infusion of oxygen and vitamins into the skin encourages the growth of new cells as well as collagen, leaving your skin smooth, rejuvenated and glowing.
Oxygen facials are especially effective for hydrating dry skin, as the oxygen increases circulation, improves skin texture, restores cell nourishment and stimulates collagen production.
The one disadvantage of oxygen facials is that their effects don’t usually last very long, and since spa oxygen facials are costly, this could be a hindrance.
NowMi Oxygen Facial Treatment
The NowMi oxygen facial treatment is the perfect solution for caring for dry skin, as it further improves on all the benefits of a spa oxygen facial treatment, while it can be performed at home at a much lower cost.
The NowMi Pro sonic device is the ultimate skin care solution. It enables you to deeply cleans your skin on a daily basis and also perform weekly oxygenation treatments that nourish and rejuvenate the skin.
The weekly oxygenation facials infuse the skin with pure vitamin C, vitamin E and hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan, is a substance naturally produced by the body. Its primary function is to retain water and it can hold 1,000 times its weight in water! Hyaluronic acid therefore plays a major role in keeping tissues moist and well lubricated and helps prevent dry skin.
In addition, vitamin C and vitamin E are infused into the skin. The vitamins are known for their antioxidant qualities and they help the skin combat skin dryness caused by overexposure to UV rays and other damaging extrinsic factors.
What sets the NowMi treatment apart from traditional oxygenation treatments is the fact that the NowMi treatment stimulates the skin to oxygenate itself from within. This is different from traditional oxygenation treatments in which the oxygen is applied externally onto the skin.
The NowMi treatment stimulates a natural physiological response called the ‘Bohr Effect’. The Bohr Effect states that when the body is exposed to high concentrations of Carbon Dioxide (CO2), it responds by sending oxygen (O2) rich blood cells to the area. So, during the NowMi treatment, when the effervescent tablet comes into contact with the nourishing gel, a chemical reaction occurs which creates high concentrations of minute Carbon Dioxide (CO2) bubbles on the skin’s surface. The body then responds by sending oxygen (O2) rich blood cells to the facial skin. As a result of this natural oxygenation process, the capillary flow in the skin increases which optimizes the penetration and absorption of the nutrients.
In this way the NowMi oxygen facial treatment has all the benefits of a traditional oxygen facial, with the advantage of maximizing effects by using the body’s natural ability to oxygenate.
